The mushroom zoetrope on video!

Here is a first attempt at capturing our zoetrope – How Mushrooms Grow, an Interactive Sculpture, by Belly & Bones – on film. Many thanks to Matty Sidle for filming and Esquivel for the music.

Artists Tony Candelaria and Stef Choi designed and built this zoetrope for the Oregon Mushroom Stories project. It premiered at the Mush Fair on December 2 and 3, 2012. From the falling spores to the growing mycelium to the sprouting mushrooms, it presents the mysterious life cycle of mushrooms.

This zoetrope creates animation through the steady flashing of a strobe light. Because the shutter speed on the camera was at a different rate, light flashes through this video. We hope to get footage in the future without these flashes. In the meantime, enjoy! We would love to bring the zoetrope out into the world once more. If you want to learn more about it, please be in touch!
